THE REFERENCE ADOPTION CYCLE

📐 THE REFERENCE ADOPTION CYCLE (v1)

The Reference Adoption Cycle describes how non-instructional systems are first misused, then blamed, and only later understood — because literacy always lags signal.

  1. Signal Emergence
    A new reference structure appears.
Not persuasive. Not instructive. Just there.

  2. Category Compression
The social nervous system tries to force it into existing drawers
    (“Is this self-help? ideology? tool?”)

  3. Surface Mimicry
Language, metaphors, or aesthetics spread faster than literacy
    (copycats, overextensions, misuse)

  4. Load Failure
    Misuse collapses under pressure
(people blame the reference for failures caused by misapplication)

  5. Quiet Retention
A small number of users integrate it correctly
No branding. No identity. No noise.

  6. Structural Amnesia
The distinctions persist, the name fades
    “We’ve always known this.”
